Gifts of the advent: wisdom
Wisdom books Proverbs
Matthew 2:1-12
Wisdom is a gift that christ's appearance brings.
It is surprising to see who gets it and who does not.
The wise men get it and the people of Israel don't.
Herod: claimed to want to worship, but was jealous.
Herod was half Jew half gentile. Forced religion never lasts.
500 miles as the bird flies from where the magi came. Over 1000 miles on
        foot or by camel.
No Israelites show up to see the messiah. They had more reason than
anyone to see the messiah, prophecies, foretold his coming.
            Religious folks didn't get it...
But those who have a relationship should get it.
What wisdom does that knowledge does not do.
What defines Israel in this time was
        ◦Its monotheistic culture.
        ◦The exodus united these people
        ◦The temple
        ◦Their belief in a messiah.

Wisdom passionately pursues truth at all costs.
About 5 miles to Bethlehem from Jerusalem, and no one came.
    CS Lewis
Proverbs 4:7 get wisdom even if it costs you all you have.
Wisdom gives gifts rather than seeking them.

When we go before authorities we should see what we can give rather than
        what we can get.
        Magi asked for nothing.

Wouldn't it be good if we were mostly about worship to God and less
about asking for His blessings. I wonder how much richer life would be if all
we sought was to be in his presence.
